How To Train Your Associates to be 'Well Rounded'
by Ken Bidgood

The day to day grind of running a business can literally
overwhelm most business owners. Between managing accounts,
dealing with customer issues, directing meeting, and
finding the time to actually sell the products and services
of the company, it can be all but impossible to handle it
all. Still, business owners survive every day with little
thought of finding a solution to ease their burdens and
instead just hope the problems go away.

There are numerous ways for employees to add to their skill
set such as continuing education courses or online classes.
But, these methods pale in comparison to the knowledge they
receive from competent trainers giving them hands-on
instruction which is why most benefit from this kind of
training. The ability to see the knowledge yield real
world results is very motivating. If, at the end of the
day, the employee is both happier and better trained, why
not invest the time to give them this training?

You want to start with a competent trainer. This can be a
current employee with the necessary skills and leadership
ability to pass on the information or someone that is a
professional trainer with expertise in your field. Either
is acceptable.

Best Method to Train Associates

Training is generally done in a group setting because it
allows the instructor to cover a large number of topics
with several people at the same time. Training materials
are generally passed out and training is conducted giving
the associates hands-on experience.

For an employee to grasp the concept of selling a product or
service, they must first understand the art of selling.
Selling requires a number of skills and a fair amount of
practice. Sure, some people seam to be a natural at it, but
they are the people who learn the skills more quickly than
the rest of us.

Thorough training in sales involves a careful study of the
products or services being sold and how they are superior
to what the competition is offering. You have to make sure
that the trainees understand that potential clients are all
different and will be motivated by different factors to
make a purchase. Time will have to be devoted to training
employees to handle the varying personalities of customers
to avert problems that may arise in the future.

It is common for an administrative assistant to help
oversee accounts and aspects of customer service. It is a
good idea for people in sales to understand all facets of
the administrative assistant's job. You are not trying to
eliminate anyone's position by doing this but to give you
more flexibility to move people into different positions
should the need arise.

Ongoing Sales Training

It's important that training doesn't end with the trainer.
The company should provide periodic sales training updates
within the realm of monthly meetings. A brief overview on
'what is new' and 'how it works' should be shared with
everyone around the table. Company newsletter, email, or
audio tapes can be used to keep training fresh in the minds
of your employees.

A team of dedicated professionals that work well together
is not put together overnight. Investing in a trainer
will, however, go a long way towards obtaining your 'Dream
Team' in record time. The organization cannot help but
benefit from your efforts to raise the skill levels of
employees.
