We all go through stressful times in our lives relating to
relationships, health, jobs, finances and so on. Sometimes
these situations just take a little time and patience and
they work themselves out. Other times, it may be beneficial
to get counseling. Counseling is beneficial for many
reasons and in many circumstances. You have probably are
familiar with people who go to counseling for their
marriage, for anxiety or depression issues, or for grief
counseling. Whatever your particular need is, you may find
great relief in having someone else to discuss your concerns
and fears with.

If you are a private person and are uncomfortable sharing
your feelings and thoughts in a group, then you may want to
consider one-on-one counseling. Most counselors are happy
to offer this kind of service to their patients. This
setting is probably better for those with more personal or
more serious issues and concerns.

There are other people who actually prefer the group
counseling atmosphere because they like the input that
others can give them. Hearing someone else's point of view
and seeing someone else's perspective on any issue is
another way people find help in dealing with their
problems. Group counseling can vary in size from just a
few people to a larger sized group.

Often, if a person has medical insurance, it will cover the
cost of seeing a counselor. This would be included as a
"mental" or "behavioral" health benefit. There are people
who are not aware that this is included in their benefits or
coverage, so if you can't find the information in the
paperwork that you've been given, give your insurance
company a call before you pay for any counseling out of your
own pocket.

There is usually more than one option for individuals who
are covered by a mental or behavioral health benefit. Your
insurance company should be able to provide you with a list
of "in-network" providers who you can choose from for your
counseling. Or they may allow you to see any counselor of
your choice. If you cannot choose any counselor, or you
don't like any of the choices on your provider list, you may
also have the option to go "out of network" and choose your
own provider. However, if you go out of network, this
usually costs more out of pocket for you. If you use the in
network providers you usually just have to pay the co-pay.
Be certain that you also find out how many visits you are
allowed in a certain time period. It varies from plan to
plan and from condition to condition.

Recognizing that you may need help in relationships, with
an addiction, or just to build your self-image is the first
step on the road to recovery. Counseling is an excellent
way to take you on down the path. With a qualified
counselor you can begin to heal yourself and get on with
the business of living your new life.
